Hey Friend!
In this manifesto…
We are cracking open the pages of Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler—yes, the Octavia. Visionary. Futurist. Seer. If you’ve never read this book before (or if it's been a while), this is your official invitation to read it with me. I’m just starting it now, and already I can feel the eerie parallels between the world she wrote about in 1993 and the one we’re currently living in. And baby… it’s giving “prophetic Black woman with a warning.”
Why This Book—and Why Now?
Here’s the setup: Parable of the Sower is set in a broken America, where climate change, corporate greed, and social collapse have created a terrifyingly real dystopia. Sound familiar? The government is collapsing. Wealth gaps have widened. Communities are gated or gutted. And people are either scavenging, surviving, or fighting to protect what's left.
And while this is technically a work of fiction, Butler wrote this book not just as a warning but as a blueprint. She saw the writing on the wall, and instead of sounding the alarm with a megaphone, she used a pen. Parable feels like both a survival manual and a sacred prophecy.
Reading it now—especially as Black women who are reimagining our futures, building soft lives with sharp eyes—feels urgent. We cannot afford to be lulled to sleep by distractions. We cannot afford to ignore what we’re seeing with our own eyes: the rise in fascism, the weaponization of poverty, the commodification of hope.

What Stands Out So Far
Without giving too much away (because I want you to read it with me!), here’s what’s already hitting:
Lauren, the main character, is only 15 when she starts waking up to the reality around her. She starts documenting her thoughts, philosophies, fears, and future beliefs—something I deeply resonate with. She's a writer and a witness. Like many of us.
The world feels too close to home. Hyperinflation. Police brutality. Lack of healthcare. Gated communities. Dangerous streets. Rising religions. It's not a dystopia anymore—it’s a shadow of our reality.
The spiritual thread. Lauren creates a belief system called Earthseed that centers on the idea that “God is Change.” Whew. Sit with that. Think about how often we resist change—when maybe, it’s the only thing that can save us.
Join Me In the Reading
This isn’t just a book club. This is a call to clarity. A call to reclaim our future. A call to get spiritually and mentally prepared for what’s next.
If you’re feeling like the world is spiraling and you're trying to hold on to your softness, your peace, and your purpose—this book will speak to you.
So grab a copy—library, audio, Kindle, or paperback—and start reading. I’ll be sharing reflections along the way, and I’d love to hear what’s stirring in you as you read.
